Reduce heat to medium and carefully add orange slices in a single layer, avoiding overlap. Let them simmer gently for 44-60 minutes, turning occasionally with tongs, until the white pith becomes nearly see-through.

Using tongs, carefully transfer orange slices to a wire rack in a single layer. Let them dry at room temperature for 24-48 hours until they feel set, like gummy candy.
